Major Jackson was awarded the 2000 Cave Canem Poetry Prize by Al Young for Leaving Saturn, a finalist for the 2002 National Book Critics Circle Award. His second collection of poems, Hoops, was published by W.W. Norton in 2005. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he holds degrees from Temple University and the University of Oregon. His poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, Boulevard, Callaloo and The New Yorker, among other journals, as well as in several anthologies. A 2003-04 Library of Congress Witter Bynner Fellow, he is the recipient of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference and The MacDowell Colony. He is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Vermont.
