Public readings give Cave Canem an opportunity to showcase the talent of our fellows and to support their development as confident presenters of their work. We sponsor an annual reading at the Celebration of Black Writing in Philadelphia and have collaborated with the Academy of American Poets to present the winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize and fellows with new books at a New York City reading for the past two years.

Cave Canem and the New School University’s Creative Writing Program collaborate on an ongoing series of Legacy Conversations, where prominent African American poets discuss their lives, their work, and the interplay between the two. Past Conversations have featured Sonia Sanchez and Lucille Clifton in conversation, Rita Dove interviewed by Elizabeth Alexander, and Yusef Komunyakaa interviewed by Terrance Hayes. These events are made possible through a grant from the New York Community Trust.

Cave Canem readings were part of the 2001 People's Poetry Gathering in New York City, the 2004 Furious Flower Black Poetry Conference, and the Virginia Festival of the Book for the past two years. Other readings have been held at the Sol Goodman YM/YWHA, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Nuyorican Poetry Café in New York City, Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Washington, DC, Detroit, New Orleans, and other cities.
