oil paints
cigarette ash

6. soft-boiled eggs
hidden in cloth napkins

7. welts the size of licorice sticks

8. police at a traffic accident
police at the front door

9. sitting on the porch steps
waiting

Monica A. Hand is a poet and aspiring book artist. She is the author of Seven Seasons of Separation and Loss of Seven Seasons Lost(7 Hands Press, 2002), a limited-edition, hand-made book of haiku. Monica has received individual artist fellowships from the Maryland State and Montgomery County Arts Council. She is founder and director of Poetry Slam Academy, an in-school, after school and Saturday program for middle-school and high school youth interested in writing and performing poetry. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with her two teenage children and works full-time for the U.S. Postal Service as a Public Relations representative.
